
2025 Young Scientist
Award Banquet
The Young Scientist Award Banquet is an annual event hosted by the Northeast Ohio section of the American Chemical Society. The event honors young scientists from Lake and Ashtabula counties who have submitted entries into the Chemists Celebrate Earth Week essay or poem contests as well as the top three participants of the Chemistry Olympiad. In addition to honoring local students, exceptional chemistry teachers are recognized for their teaching excellence. Finally, local section members who have achieved 50 and 60 year membership milestones will be recognized.

When: Tuesday April 22, 2025. Social Time begins at 6:00 pm with the formal event beginning at 6:30 pm

Where: Pine Ridge Country Club. 30601 Ridge Road, Wickliffe, Ohio.

Tickets for the dinner and event are $10 per person, payable with cash or check at the door. Student award winners and their parents attend for free.

This years keynote address will be provided by Dr. Emilie Beaudon from the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center at The Ohio State University.

Dr. Beaudon is an Assistant Professor in Earth Sciences and an expert in the areas of Polar and Alpine Paleoclimatology, Aeolian Geochemistry and Paleoenvironment, Cryosphere Change and Atmospheric Pollution.

Dr Beaudon will present a talk titled 'Melting Messengers: how human impact on climate is inscribed and erased from the chemistry of high-altitude glaciers.
Her research focuses on extracting multi-century records of mineral dust, black carbon, and trace element atmospheric contamination within deep ice cores retrieved from Polar and mid-latitude glaciers. She will discuss the significance of climate records from mountain glaciers and present some of her recent work in Tibet and in the Peruvian Andes. The multiple challenges faced by ice core paleo-climatologists will also be explored: from the retrieval of the ice to the establishment of its chronology; from the records interpretation to the quest to a new drilling site, and the future of this field of research in a warming world where the cryosphere is vanishing.​
