2024 CCEW Illustrated Poem Contest

The Northeastern Ohio Local Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) is encouraging local students in Kindergarten through 12th grade to participate in this national contest as part of Chemists Celebrate Earth Week (CCEW). Details and design resources can be found on the CCEW website.

 

The contest deadline for the NEOACS section is March 31st, 2024 at 11:59 PM Eastern

 

Submissions from students within Lake and Ashtabula counties will be eligible for prizes from the NEO section. Cash prizes will be awarded in K-2nd, 3rd-5th, 6th-8th, and 9th-12th grade categories. 1st place in each category is $100.

 

Submissions can be uploaded to Google forms. Contact Dr. Samali Weliwatte with questions regarding the contest.
 

Winners of the Northeastern Ohio Local Section’s Illustrated Poem Contest will advance to the National ACS Illustrated Poem Contest for a chance to be featured on the ACS website and to win prizes! Additionally, winners will also be invited to attend the NEO ACS Spring Banquet on Thursday, April 20, 2023.

Contest Rules and Directions

​

Write and illustrate a poem using the Chemists Celebrate Earth Week Theme "Get a Charge Out of Chemistry". Your poem must be no more than 40 words and in one of the following styles:

​

HAIKU - LIMERICK - ODE - ABC POEM - FREE VERSE - END RHYME - BLANK VERSE

​

Possible topics related to sustainable chemistry include:

​

             Alkaline Batteries                      Disposable batteries

             Anode                                        Electrons

             Atoms                                        Rechargeable batteries

              Cathode                                     Renewable energy

​

 

Entries will be judged based upon the following criteria:

​

Artistic Merit - use of color, quality of drawing, design, and layout

Poem Message - fun, motivational, inspiring about the yearly theme

Originality and Creativity - unique, clever and/or creative design

Neatness - free of spelling and grammatical errors
